Ivorian defender Jean-Philippe Gbamin delays contract-extension talks at FC Metz

Jean-Philippe Gbamin keeps FC Metz waiting over a proposed contract extension despite delivering consistent performances during a difficult start to the club’s Ligue 1 campaign.

Metz registered only three wins in their opening 14 matches, yet Gbamin still impressed the technical staff after joining on a free transfer from FC Zürich last summer.

His current deal expires in June 2026, and Metz now pushes to secure his long-term future.

Reports in L’Équipe indicate Metz opened discussions for a new agreement and hopes to finalise terms quickly.

Gbamin’s representatives, however, prefer more time before committing to a decision, which leaves negotiations without progress for now.

Gbamin settled immediately at Metz after leaving Switzerland and established himself as a defensive leader.

The former RC Lens youth product started all 14 Ligue 1 fixtures this season and contributed one goal and one assist.

Supporters also voted him Player of the Month for September, which reinforced his rising influence inside the squad.

The Metz board seeks to reward his form and protect one of the team’s most reliable performers, but the outcome depends entirely on Gbamin and his entourage.

They may wait to see what options emerge during the next transfer window, especially if interest grows from elsewhere.

Metz hopes to keep the Ivorian international at the heart of their defence, but the situation remains uncertain until both sides agree on the next step.
