Chris Ivan Grombahi could feature in Ivory Coast’s squad for the upcoming U17 World Cup in Qatar after expressing his desire to represent his country.
The 17-year-old winger, who plays for Sporting Portugal’s U23 side, has informed the Ivorian Football Federation of his wish to join Bassiriki Diabaté’s squad for the tournament, which runs from 3 to 27 November 2025.
Reports from Intello du Foot Ivoirien state that Grombahi turned down an approach from the Portuguese Football Federation, who wanted him to switch allegiance and represent Portugal.
He has instead reaffirmed his commitment to playing for the Elephants on the international stage.
Grombahi’s performances this season underline his potential. He has made eight appearances in all competitions for Sporting’s youth team, scoring twice and providing two assists — one of them in the UEFA Youth League.
The club sees him as a key talent for the future, but both his representatives and Sporting have reportedly agreed to release him in November should he receive a call-up.
The final decision now rests with head coach Bassiriki Diabaté, who is expected to unveil his squad list soon.
If selected, Grombahi’s inclusion could bolster Ivory Coast’s attacking options as they aim to make an impact on the global stage.
Born in Ivory Coast and trained at Sporting Portugal’s academy, Grombahi signed his first professional contract earlier this year.
His rapid rise and strong technical abilities have drawn praise in Portugal and back home, with many viewing him as one of the most promising talents of his generation.
Ivory Coast’s U17 side hopes to build on its strong performances in the qualifiers and challenge for honours at the World Cup.
Grombahi’s potential involvement would add creativity and pace to their attack, qualities that could prove vital in the tournament.
The Elephants will discover their group-stage opponents later this month, with preparation plans already underway.
Diabaté aims to finalise his roster soon, and Grombahi’s availability adds another exciting option ahead of the competition.
