Ivan Toney scores twice for Al Ahli but misses penalty against Al Hazem

Despite producing a match-winning performance for Al Ahli, Ivan Toney ended the game against Al Hazem with a reminder of a less welcome part of his recent history after missing a penalty.

The England striker scored twice to help Al Ahli secure victory and also set up another goal, but he was unable to complete a personal hat-trick when the hosts were awarded a spot-kick in the 48th minute of the second half.

Toney stepped up hoping to add a third goal to his tally. His effort, however, struck the Al Hazem goalkeeper’s left-hand post and bounced away, giving him another missed opportunity from 12 yards.

The penalty was Toney’s third failure from the spot since he joined Al Ahli in the summer of 2024. The forward has established himself as a key member of the side and has scored numerous goals since moving to the Saudi league.

His previous missed penalty came last April during Al Ahli’s match against Qatar’s Al Duhail in the AFC Champions League Elite. Toney failed to convert from the penalty spot on that occasion but quickly rediscovered his scoring touch.

The striker’s first penalty miss for Al Ahli came in February, when he failed to score against Al Najma. The latest effort against Al Hazem therefore became the third penalty he has been unable to turn into a goal since beginning his career with the club.

The miss did little to diminish what was otherwise an outstanding display from Toney. His two goals and assist continued his strong scoring form and underlined his importance to Al Ahli’s attack this season.

The penalty miss was ultimately a negative detail in a night that included a significant achievement for the England forward. Toney’s decisive contribution ensured Al Ahli claimed the result, even though his attempt from the spot prevented him from completing a hat-trick.
