Ivan Toney equals Omar Al Somah record with 10-goal Saudi Pro League start

Ivan Toney has matched Omar Al Somah’s record for the most goals scored in the opening seven rounds of the Saudi Pro League after reaching 10 for Al-Ahli this season.

Al-Ahli hosted Al-Hazem at Alinma Stadium in Jeddah on Friday, with Toney scoring twice as his side continued their Roshn Saudi League campaign.

The England striker converted a penalty in the 32nd minute to put Al-Ahli 2-1 ahead. Toney had won the spot-kick himself before sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

He struck again in the final minute of the first half to complete Al-Ahli’s third goal. The goalkeeper had saved a shot from Saleh Abu Al-Shamat, but the ball fell to Toney in front of an unguarded net.

The brace took Toney’s tally to 10 goals in the current Roshn Saudi League season, putting him six goals clear at the top of the scoring charts.

The 30-year-old has reached that total in only seven league appearances, making it his best start since joining Al-Ahli in the summer of 2024 from Brentford.

Toney needed 17 matches to score 10 league goals during the 2024-2025 season. He reached the same mark after 13 games last season, underlining the speed of his progress in the current campaign.

His second goal against Al-Hazem also saw him draw level with a record held by former Al-Ahli striker Omar Al Somah. The Syrian had been the only player to score 10 goals in the first seven rounds of the Saudi league since the start of the 2009-2010 season.

Al Somah set that mark with Al-Ahli during the 2016-2017 Saudi league season, according to Opta statistics.

Toney is yet to win the Saudi league’s Golden Boot. He finished as runner-up to Al-Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo the season before last, then ended last season behind Al-Qadsiah forward Julian Quinones.
