Itumeleng Khune backs Kaizer Chiefs move for free agent Elias Mokwana

Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune has encouraged the club to consider signing Elias Mokwana after the free agent was offered to AmaKhosi by his representatives.

SABC Sport confirmed that the 27-year-old winger had been proposed to Kaizer Chiefs, who are looking to strengthen their squad under coach Fernando da Cruz.

Mokwana became available in September after ending his association with Tunisian club Esperance. A potential move to Moroccan side Wydad Athletic Club subsequently fell through because of registration issues, leaving the Bafana Bafana international without a club.

Khune believes Mokwana’s ability and experience would make him a worthwhile addition to the Kaizer Chiefs squad, particularly as the club continues to develop younger players.

“Mokwana reminds me of Jabu ‘Shuffle’ back then because he is very skilful and he is not afraid to take on his defender,” Khune said.

“He can also create and score goals, not to mention his continental experience can be very useful for AmaKhosi because the youngsters can also look up to him for guidance.”

Mokwana’s experience outside South Africa was also highlighted by former Jomo Cosmos midfielder Mark Haskins, who is a Soccer Zone analyst.

Haskins said he rated the winger highly and believed Mokwana had been capable of strengthening any of the leading clubs in the Betway Premiership before his move abroad.

“I like him and I believe that he can add value to that Kaizer Chiefs team, and I was shocked that he wasn’t pursued by one of our local giants before he went abroad,” Haskins said.
