Kenya football legend John Baraza has taken a swipe at former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher for belittling the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The former England international recently sparked a controversy, claiming the continental showpiece is not one of football’s major tournaments.
Carragher insists Salah could fall short in winning the Ballon d’Or since the AFCON is not a major tournament to push him further for the award.
His comment has received several backlash from top African footballers including Nigeria duo of Augustine Azuka Okocha and Mikel Obi.
However, John Baraza has joined the masses to condemn Carragher’s disrespectful comment against the AFCON.
“The Africa Cup of Nations is and remains the best tournament. Carragher should respect it and African football, “Was he really a good player? What did he win during his active years? I find it strange for someone, who was average in his playing years to disrespect the AFCON,”
Salah, who has represented Egypt in multiple AFCON tournaments and two World Cups, has been instrumental in Liverpool’s title push this season.
Many believe Carragher’s comments undermine African football, reinforcing a long-standing bias against the continent’s premier international competition.
