Adidas Ends Partnership with Nigeria Football Federation
Adidas has officially decided not to renew its sponsorship deal with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), a partnership that is set to end in December. The decision stems from Nigeria’s failure to meet contractual obligations, with incidents such as national team players and coaches wearing non-Adidas gear at major events drawing particular criticism.
As reported by the BBC, the German sportswear giant expressed dissatisfaction over repeated breaches, including improper kit usage—something that violates the terms of most sponsorship agreements.
This ends a long-standing relationship that began in 1994, was briefly interrupted by a switch to Nike, and then resumed in 2004. During this time, Adidas supplied gear to several Nigerian national teams, including the Super Eagles and Super Falcons.
Compounding the situation is Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, despite being the reigning champions. The Super Eagles were knocked out in the qualifiers behind South Africa and Congo, further dampening the federation’s market appeal.
With Adidas walking away, the NFF is actively searching for a new kit sponsor, with Nike once again being mentioned as a potential partner.
