It’s good news to have Alexander Isak back – Arne Slot
There is a renewed sense of optimism at Anfield as Alexander Isak edges closer to full fitness, handing Arne Slot a major attacking boost at a critical stage of the season.
The Liverpool head coach has openly expressed his excitement at welcoming the Swedish striker back into team training, describing the development as a significant moment for both player and club after months of frustration.
Isak is expected to rejoin full sessions on Thursday, marking his first involvement with the squad since sustaining a serious left ankle injury in December.
The setback, which included a fibula fracture, occurred during Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, when the striker was challenged by Micky van de Ven while scoring the opening goal.
Slot’s optimism and careful reintegration
Slot has made no attempt to hide his satisfaction at Isak’s progress, underlining the importance of the forward’s return after an extended spell on the sidelines. The Dutchman believes the 26-year-old’s presence, even if initially limited, could prove decisive during the final stretch of the campaign.
“He’s going to train with the group again for the first time tomorrow,” Slot said.
“If you’ve worked so hard for three, four months or something like that and then to return to team training, that’s for everyone very nice. So Alex is, in that sense, in a good place.
“Of course, it’s only his first session, after three or four months (out), with the team but it’s good to have him back because we all know who we signed and we’ve signed an incredible striker.
“So to have him again in a team that’s usually generating quite a lot chances — and maybe not immediately from the first moment that he can start – but to have him back for the last two months is, I think, very helpful for us.”
A season of disruption for a record signing
Isak’s first campaign on Merseyside has been defined by interruptions. The striker, who arrived from Newcastle United in a British record £125 million deal last summer, struggled to find rhythm even before his injury. Limited availability and fitness concerns restricted his impact, with just three goals and one assist in 16 appearances across all competitions.
That lack of continuity has been felt across Liverpool’s attacking unit. Without a consistent focal point, Slot has often had to reshuffle his forward line, searching for balance and cutting edge. The absence of Isak’s movement, physical presence and finishing ability has contributed to an attack that, at times, has lacked its usual fluency.
Crucial run-in across multiple fronts
The timing of Isak’s return could hardly be more significant. Liverpool are entering a demanding phase of the season, with high-stakes fixtures looming in both domestic and European competitions. A blockbuster FA Cup quarter-final clash with Manchester City awaits, while a Champions League last-eight tie against Paris Saint-Germain adds further pressure.
At the same time, the club remains locked in a battle to secure Champions League qualification through the league, making squad depth and attacking efficiency essential.
Added depth and competition up front
Even if Isak is initially deployed in short bursts from the bench, his availability alone alters Liverpool’s attacking dynamics. Hugo Ekitike has carried much of the burden in the No 9 role during Isak’s absence but has struggled to maintain consistency over extended periods.
The option to introduce Isak as a substitute represents a clear upgrade, offering fresh energy, technical quality and a proven goal threat late in matches. His return also increases internal competition, which could raise performance levels across the forward line.
Broader injury picture offers mixed news
Slot may soon have further reinforcements. Mohamed Salah is reportedly close to returning from a groin issue, while Federico Chiesa has resumed training after fitness concerns. There is also cautious optimism surrounding Jeremie Frimpong following a minor scare on international duty.
However, not all updates are positive. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker remains sidelined and is expected to be unavailable for a longer period.
