Ezri Konsa says the atmosphere inside the Aston Villa dressing room is “bouncing” as the club continue a remarkable run that has written their name into the history books.
Villa head into tonight’s Premier League clash with Arsenal on the back of 11 consecutive victories in all competitions, a sequence that matches a club record set more than a century ago. Their dramatic 2-1 win away at Chelsea on Saturday ensured Unai Emery’s side equalled achievements last reached in 1897 and 1914.
The Villans have also won eight Premier League matches in a row, their best top-flight run since 1910 underlining the momentum building around Emery’s team.
For Konsa, who has Congolese heritage through his family, the achievement carries special meaning.
“It’s always special creating history,” the defender said with a smile. “I’ve been here for a long time, so to create some history is an amazing feeling. And long may it continue.”
Reflecting on the Chelsea victory, Konsa admitted it was a stern test, particularly in the opening stages.
“It’s never easy playing away from home,” he told VillaTV. “In the first half we struggled to play our game. They made it difficult for us, we had to stay strong defensively and we conceded one goal.”
What pleased him most, however, was the resilience shown once again by the team.
“This season, when we’ve gone a goal or two down, we haven’t dropped our heads,” he said. “We’ve always believed, and for me, I know the qualities we have on the pitch.”
With Arsenal next up, Villa have another opportunity to extend their winning streak and further cement what is already shaping up to be one of the most memorable periods in the club’s long history.
