Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong has expressed his delight at helping his side reach the final of the Europa Conference League (ECL).
The young defender, who has Ghanaian heritage, played a key role in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Djurgarden in the second leg of their semifinal on Thursday night, securing a 5-1 aggregate triumph.
Reflecting on the journey, Acheampong admitted that competing in the ECL has been a memorable experience.
“Playing in the Europa Conference League has been really enjoyable – a chance to play at Stamford Bridge and away, so it has been good,” he said.
“It’s a dream. I didn’t think I would get this far in such a short space of time. If I could lift the trophy, I would be really excited, really happy.”
Acheampong also praised Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca for his guidance and support throughout the campaign.
“He gives me a lot of confidence, so every time I get on the pitch, I want to repay him and try my best,” he said. “I love the club, so as long as I can stay here my whole life, I will do it.”
The semifinal also saw 16-year-old Reggie Walsh handed a rare start, with Acheampong offering his support to the youngster.
“It’s the first time I have played with Reggie as well. I told him just to replicate his game,” he said.
Chelsea will now prepare for the ECL final against Real Betis, where they hope to cap off their European campaign with silverware.
