“It’s a disgrace; the world will not respect Africans” – Senegal star Nampalys Mendy Slams CAF over AFCON decision
Senegalese midfielder Nampalys Mendy has voiced strong criticism of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the controversial decision to withdraw the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title from Senegal and award it to Morocco.
The 33-year-old Watford star, who missed out on playing for Senegal in the last AFCON, spoke candidly about the personal and professional impact of the ruling, as well as its broader implications for African football.
A Personal Blow
Reflecting on his exclusion from the tournament, Mendy told the French website Foot Mercato, “It cost me dearly. It hurt me deeply not to be called up to the national team again. If you saw the atmosphere between us, you would be amazed. We are like brothers.”
He continued, “It hurt me a lot that I missed the tournament; it devastated me. It’s fate. It cost me dearly, and I’m upset about it, but I move on.”
Despite the disappointment, Mendy remains focused on the future: “The World Cup is still a dream. I’m doing my best to be there. It’s a clear goal. The decision is up to the coach, but he knows he can count on me.”
Outrage Over CAF’s Decision
Mendy did not hold back when discussing CAF’s controversial ruling. “It’s a scandal… For me, it’s African football that is harmed. It’s not just Senegal that’s affected, but the whole of African football,” he said.
He highlighted the reputational damage this decision has caused: “No one respects us after something like this happens. You see, here, the English are talking about it and making fun of it. And at Watford, they’re talking about it too. People look at Africans as clowns. That’s not true. It’s ridiculous for Moroccans too.”
Shocked by the Final
On the events of the dramatic AFCON final, Mendy admitted he was left stunned: “Honestly, I’m not going to talk about it. I was shocked. My wife and I were watching. We were all shocked. We were wondering: What’s going on? I didn’t understand anything. The referee, he shocked me. I didn’t understand anything. It was awful.”
Pride Despite Controversy
Despite the turmoil, Mendy still expressed admiration for the tournament itself: “It’s a fantastic tournament. Honestly, it’s excellent, and a source of pride. In fact, I’ve experienced it from both perspectives. I participated in the Africa Cup of Nations, and I experienced it as a fan.”
For Mendy and many Senegalese fans, the ruling represents more than just a lost trophy; it symbolises a challenge to the credibility and respect of African football on the global stage.
