Ernesto Sabatini (from the Pescara club), Manlio Porcellini (from the Livorno club), and Vito Molfese (from the Pescara emergency services) have been under investigation since 2012 in connection with the Piermario Morosini case. The affair revolves around the tragic death of the Livorno player, who suffered a fatal heart attack during a Serie B match in April of that year. The trio is suspected of negligence as no defibrillator was utilized at the time of the incident. However, a committee of experts, consulted during the investigation, indicated that the use of the semi-automatic defibrillator available at the stadium might have increased the chances of saving Morosini’s life.
Following the expert assessment, the three doctors will face trial for negligent homicide, commencing on December 1.
Morosini’s collapse during the Pescara-Livorno Serie B match on April 14 sent shockwaves across Italy, prompting the suspension of all soccer championships that weekend as a gesture of mourning.
A 250-page report authored by Professor Cristian D’Ovidio revealed that Morosini suffered from “arithmogenic cardiomyopathy,” a rare genetic condition that progressively transforms heart muscle cells into fat, making it challenging to detect.
