Another distressing incident of racism has marred the Atalanta-AC Milan match (2-1) over the weekend. Kevin Constant, the Guinean defender for AC Milan, was targeted by Atalanta fans who threw a banana onto the field. This deplorable act has sparked widespread condemnation.
The Italian League has responded by sanctioning Atalanta. A section of the Atleti Azzurri d’Italia stadium will be closed for one match, with the club also facing a 40,000 euro fine.
Despite these penalties, there are concerns that such actions will continue in European stadiums. FIFA president Sepp Blatter has suggested more severe measures, stating, “The first time a disciplinary committee deducts points from a team for racist behavior, such incidents will come to an end.”
