Italy face ‘difficult period’ as Roberto Mancini begins second spell, says Gabriele Oriali

Gabriele Oriali has warned that Italy are entering a “difficult period” as Roberto Mancini begins his return as national team manager, while condemning the behaviour of Juventus supporters during a minute’s silence for Italian and Inter Milan great Sandro Mazzola.

Italy have started their first training camp under Mancini and will face Belgium next Friday in the Nations League, in what will be the manager’s first match since his return. They will then travel to play Turkey on 28 September before meeting France on 2 October.

Oriali has also resumed his role alongside Mancini, having previously worked with him during Italy’s successful Euro 2020 campaign.

“This is certainly not the best moment for Italian football. We know we are heading into a difficult period,” Oriali told Rai 2, in comments reported by Football Italia.

“The players also need to understand that. The important thing is for everyone to recognise the situation, share it and take collective responsibility. Respect and a little discipline never do any harm.”

He added: “By finding that team spirit and collective unity, we can achieve results.”

Oriali criticises Juventus ultras

Oriali, a former Inter player, criticised the Juventus ultras who turned their backs on the pitch during a minute’s silence held to remember Mazzola.

“I remember my first training sessions at Appiano Gentile. Mazzola was one of the people who welcomed me with open arms,” he said.

“He drove me home one day after training, and people could not believe it when they saw him. I have only wonderful memories of him as a team-mate and as a man.”

Oriali also praised Mazzola’s work as an administrator, adding: “We must not forget that he was also an outstanding director who brought Ronaldo to Italian football.”

The former Inter midfielder described the supporters’ reaction as unacceptable.

“The ultras turning their backs was an ugly image,” Oriali said. “I hope those people are identified and removed from the stadium. It is shameful.

“There are heroes who rise above the shirts they wear, and this was simply an unfortunate gesture.”
