Italy’s early exit from the World Cup following their loss to Uruguay is already triggering significant fallout. In the immediate aftermath of the defeat, Cesare Prandelli, the Italian national team coach, resigned. Prandelli admitted to Italian television that he felt he could no longer carry on with his role, saying, “My project failed. After the match, I handed in my resignation.”
The consequences don’t stop there. Giancarlo Abete, president of the Italian Football Federation, also stepped down, although he expressed hope that Prandelli might reconsider his decision.
Italy ended their World Cup campaign in Brazil 2014 at the bottom of Group D, finishing third after suffering a similar fate in the previous 2010 tournament in South Africa. This back-to-back first-round elimination marks a low point for the historically successful Italian squad.
