Rampant racism continues to plague European football fields. Despite symbolic gestures like the banana in solidarity with Daniel Alves and condemnations from FIFA President Sepp Blatter, it’s evident that more substantial action is needed to deter pseudo-supporters from perpetrating racism in stadiums across the continent.
Once again, a player of color found himself the target of fan abuse. Kevin Constant, a defender for AC Milan, experienced this firsthand during a Serie A match against Atalanta Bergamo (resulting in a 2-1 victory for Milan). Amidst a break in play, certain fans directed their bigotry towards the Guinean player by hurling bananas onto the pitch.
In a display of solidarity, Constant’s teammate Nigel de Jong collected the discarded fruit from the sidelines.
