Former Marseille and AC Milan defender Adil Rami has clarified his recent comments about Lamine Yamal, insisting his criticism was not intended to insult the Barcelona teenager’s family.
Yamal, who is of Equatoguinean and Moroccan descent through his parents, has become one of the most talked-about young talents in world football following his breakout performances with Barcelona and Spain.
However, Rami drew attention this week for publicly questioning the 18-year-old’s off-field behaviour, particularly his dress sense and perceived attitude.
The 2018 World Cup winner took to social media again on Thursday night to provide context for his remarks.
“I was clearly misunderstood,” Rami wrote. “I wasn’t referring to the player Lamine Yamal, nor to his talent (which is enormous, no complaints about that), but to some recent behavior. Which, in my opinion, suggests a rather uncertain future if things continue like this.”
Rami also addressed the controversial phrase “nique ta mère,” which sparked widespread backlash. “It was a metaphor (admittedly awkward) and not an insult to his mother or his family,” he explained.
Despite the controversy, Rami reiterated his respect for Yamal’s footballing ability and hoped the youngster would stay grounded.
“I hope he gets his head straight, though. Because he has the potential to leave his mark on his era… in a way other than an uproar like this,” he concluded.
