‘It was Sporting CP all the way’ – Nestory Irankunda reveals why he chose Sporting

Nestory Irankunda has revealed that Sporting CP’s ambitious project convinced him to join the Portuguese giants after the club completed his signing from Watford.

The 20-year-old Australian international has signed a long-term contract until 2031, with Sporting reportedly paying €15 million for his transfer, plus a further €3 million in potential add-ons. His deal also includes an €80 million release clause.

Irankunda, who impressed at the 2026 World Cup, said conversations with people within Sporting’s structure gave him the confidence to accept the move and begin a new chapter of his career at Alvalade.

“I accepted the offer thanks to conversations I had with people within the club’s structure. The project seemed very good to me and, obviously, Sporting CP is a top club with a great history. I wanted to accept this challenge, and I’m ready,” he told Sporting’s media.

The forward, who scored once in four appearances for Australia at the World Cup, said Sporting’s reputation and passionate support also played a major role in his decision.

‘When they told me about Sporting CP, it was Sporting CP all the way’

Irankunda admitted that even from Australia, he was aware of Sporting’s stature and the passion surrounding the club.

“Even someone who lives on the other side of the world, like me, looks at Sporting CP and understands how fantastic and passionate the fans are. That’s why, and also because of the club’s history, I get goosebumps thinking that I’m wanted by a club like this. When they told me about Sporting CP, it was Sporting CP all the way,” he added.

The former Watford winger arrives in Portugal after featuring 42 times in the Championship last season, scoring four goals and registering four assists.

He now has his sights firmly set on winning silverware with his new club and establishing himself as an important figure in Sporting’s attack.

“I came to win titles and to play for great fans. I want to make history, and there is no better place to do that than at Sporting. I am very happy to be here, and I hope to win trophies this season,” Irankunda said.

Champions League dream awaits

The Australian also spoke excitedly about the prospect of making his Champions League debut, describing the opportunity as a childhood dream.

“It’s a moment of great happiness and pride. I’m very excited. Any child or person who loves football dreams of playing in the Champions League. Having that opportunity will be fantastic, and a dream come true,” he said.

Irankunda described 2026 as the best year of his career so far after his World Cup experience and hopes his move to Sporting will take him to another level.

“2026 was, so far, the best year of my career and I want to make it even better by having a great start at Sporting,” he said.

The versatile forward, who can operate anywhere across the attack, also promised to bring his pace, power and creativity to the Portuguese champions.

“I’m ready to get started. We have a great season ahead, and we’re going to win a lot,” he promised.
