‘It could blow up Arsenal’s structure’ – Charlie Austin warns against Vinicius Junior gamble

Former Premier League striker Charlie Austin has warned Arsenal against pursuing a move for Vinicius Junior, claiming the Brazilian winger’s arrival could disrupt the carefully built structure that has transformed the club into title contenders.

Vinicius is at the centre of growing speculation over his future at Real Madrid, with reports suggesting Arsenal are monitoring the situation and could make a move for the 26-year-old despite his huge salary demands.

The Brazil international currently earns around £15 million per year at Madrid and has one year remaining on his contract. A deal matching those figures at the Emirates Stadium would reportedly make him the highest-paid player in Arsenal’s squad by a significant margin.

Austin believes such a move could create tension among Mikel Arteta’s players and undo the wage structure that has been key to Arsenal’s recent progress.

Austin fears wage imbalance at Arsenal

The former Southampton and QPR forward admitted Vinicius’ quality would make Arsenal a stronger team but questioned whether the financial impact would outweigh the benefits.

“I really think it could blow up the structure at Arsenal,” Austin explained.

“I don’t think it would be the look, or the way Arsenal have been over the last four, five, six years.”

Austin highlighted the club’s steady rebuild under Arteta, arguing that Arsenal’s success has been based on maintaining balance rather than signing players on significantly higher wages.

“We all criticised (Arsenal in the past), but look how they’ve managed to build themselves into this position, and to then bring a player like that in… the structure would just be blown out of the water.”

The former striker pointed specifically to the potential gap between Vinicius’ salary and that of Arsenal’s current top earners.

“He’s going to be earning nearly two-and-a-half times more than (Declan) Rice!”

Madrid facing Vinicius decision

Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Vinicius remains a Real Madrid player, with discussions ongoing over a possible contract extension.

However, Madrid are reportedly considering the possibility of allowing the winger to leave this summer rather than risk losing one of their biggest assets for free next year.

The Spanish giants are unwilling to enter the final months of Vinicius’ contract without clarity over his plans, as he would be free to negotiate with foreign clubs from January.

Arsenal could look to take advantage of that uncertainty as they continue to strengthen their squad in pursuit of major trophies.

Austin acknowledged the fear factor Vinicius would bring to the Premier League but believes Arsenal must carefully consider the consequences.

“If he joins Arsenal it’ll frighten the majority of the Premier League, it really would. But I think it could cause more harm than good for Arsenal football club, I really do.”
