Issa Tounkara makes Valenciennes switch as Mali midfielder leaves Southampton U21

Mali midfielder Issa Tounkara has joined Valenciennes FC from Southampton U21 on loan, completing a move to the French club until 30 June 2027.

The 18-year-old defensive midfielder switches from England’s Premier League 2 to Valenciennes’ Ligue 3 set-up, with the deal completed on 31 August 2026. No transfer fee has been disclosed for the move.

Tounkara joined Southampton U21 from Mali club Etoiles Mande on 1 July 2026, but made the move to France before featuring for the English side in the 2026-27 campaign. He was unused in Southampton U21’s listed Premier League 2 and National League Cup fixtures, recording no appearances, goals or assists before departing.

Born on 20 June 2008, Tounkara is eligible to represent Mali and has been listed primarily as a defensive midfielder. His arrival gives Valenciennes an 18-year-old option in the centre of the pitch as the club adds a player with recent experience of the Southampton academy environment.

The loan agreement is scheduled to end on 30 June 2027, when Tounkara is due to return to Southampton U21. His move to Valenciennes therefore represents a temporary change of club rather than a permanent departure from Southampton’s set-up.

Tounkara’s transfer follows a short initial spell with Southampton after his arrival from Etoiles Mande, and he now begins his first recorded period with Valenciennes. The French side becomes his current club for the 2026-27 season, while Southampton remain his parent club for the duration of the loan.

The move was completed on 31 August, with Tounkara joining Valenciennes from Southampton U21 on loan.
