Sporting CP near €23m agreement for Issa Doumbia
Sporting CP are closing in on the signing of midfielder Issa Doumbia after reaching advanced negotiations with Venezia FC over a transfer reportedly worth €23 million including bonuses.
The 22-year-old, who had attracted interest from several clubs across Europe in recent months, now appears close to completing a move to the Portuguese champions after deciding on his preferred destination.
According to journalist Nicolò Schira, Sporting Lisbon are finalising an agreement with Venezia for the transfer of the central midfielder.
Reports indicate that the Portuguese side has already secured a contract agreement with the player running until 2031.
Doumbia’s future had become the subject of growing interest during the transfer window, with clubs from multiple leagues monitoring his situation closely. Everton, Newcastle United, Brentford FC, AFC Bournemouth, Benfica, Beşiktaş JK and RC Strasbourg Alsace were all reportedly interested in signing the midfielder.
Despite the competition, Sporting now appear to have moved ahead in the race after convincing the player with their long-term project and reaching financial common ground with Venezia.
Doumbia remains under contract with Venezia until June 2029, but his performances this season significantly increased his market value and attracted wider attention from clubs across Europe.
According to Transfermarkt, the midfielder is currently valued at €8 million. However, Venezia’s strong negotiating position and the growing demand for the player contributed to the higher transfer fee being discussed.
The Treviglio-born midfielder enjoyed an impressive campaign, featuring in 38 matches across all competitions.
During that period, he scored 10 goals and provided six assists, underlining his importance in midfield and his ability to contribute offensively.
With negotiations now at an advanced stage, Sporting CP are expected to complete the transfer soon unless there is a late change in discussions.
The move would represent one of the most significant steps of Doumbia’s career as he prepares for a new challenge in Portuguese football.
