Ismaïla Sarr’s future at Stade Rennais could be one of the major talking points of the upcoming transfer window. At just 21 years old, the Senegalese attacking midfielder has enjoyed an impressive season in Ligue 1 and across all competitions, performances that have inevitably attracted interest from abroad. Rennes are not actively pushing him out, but the club has made it clear that they would not stand in his way if a sufficiently attractive offer were to arrive.
After joining Rennes from FC Metz in the summer of 2017 for around €17 million, Sarr has steadily developed into one of the team’s most influential attacking players. During the recently completed season, he featured in 50 matches in all competitions, scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists. These statistics underline not only his ability to finish chances but also his growing importance as a creator, capable of destabilizing defenses with his pace, dribbling, and vision.
His consistency and explosiveness have not gone unnoticed. According to L’Équipe, two Premier League clubs in particular are closely monitoring his situation: Newcastle United and Watford. Newcastle are even reported to have taken concrete steps by submitting an offer in the region of €30 million. However, Rennes quickly made their position clear. While they are open to negotiations, they consider that figure below the true market value of their player and therefore insufficient to trigger a transfer.
The Breton club’s management reportedly values Sarr at closer to €40 million, reflecting both his performances and his potential for further development. With his contract running until June 2021, Rennes are under no immediate pressure to sell. This contractual security strengthens their negotiating position and allows them to be patient, waiting for an offer that truly matches their expectations.
Beyond the club level, Ismaïla Sarr’s international situation could also play a significant role in shaping his future. He has become an undisputed starter in Aliou Cissé’s attacking setup with Senegal, earning regular call-ups and establishing himself as a key figure for the Lions of Teranga. His speed and direct style have made him a constant threat on the wing, and he is expected to be one of Senegal’s major assets at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Rennes are reportedly hoping that a strong showing at the continental tournament will further increase Sarr’s visibility and, consequently, his market value. A successful AFCON could encourage more clubs to enter the race and potentially spark a bidding war, a scenario that would benefit the French side. From Rennes’ perspective, the timing could hardly be better: a young, productive attacker, already experienced at both domestic and international level, approaching a major international competition.
For Sarr himself, the coming months could prove decisive. Interest from the Premier League underlines the appeal of his profile: quick, technically gifted, and capable of making the difference in the final third. Whether it is Newcastle, Watford, or another club that ultimately makes the decisive move, his future appears wide open. What is certain is that Stade Rennais will not part with their prized asset cheaply, and any club hoping to secure his services will need to meet the high expectations set by the Breton management.
Until then, all eyes will be on Ismaïla Sarr, both in a Rennes shirt and with Senegal, as his performances may well determine the next step of a career that continues to rise at an impressive pace.
