Ismail Kartal resigns as Fenerbahce manager after Roma draw

Ismail Kartal has resigned as manager of Fenerbahce after the club drew 1-1 with Roma in their opening match of the league phase of the Champions League.

Kartal confirmed his decision to reporters after the match at Chobani Stadium, Fenerbahce’s home ground.

“I have submitted my resignation,” said the Turkish manager. “I made this decision to give the club freedom. I resigned with absolutely no intention of returning.”

Kartal’s contract with Fenerbahce was due to run until the summer of 2027. He began his fourth spell in charge of the club on 26 June.

Fenerbahce are currently ninth in the Turkish league with six points. Their Champions League campaign is their first appearance in the competition for 17 years.

Roma took the lead through Bryan Cristante in the 39th minute. The midfielder fired a low shot from outside the penalty area to put the visitors ahead.

Archie Brown equalised for Fenerbahce three minutes after half-time, scoring from inside the box in the 48th minute.

The draw was Fenerbahce’s first match in the Champions League league phase, but it was not enough to prevent Kartal’s departure.
