Ismaël Bennacer’s future hangs in the balance just days before the transfer window slams shut, as uncertainty surrounding his fitness adds a fresh layer of complexity to an already delicate situation at AC Milan.
The Algerian midfielder, 27, is attracting significant interest from clubs in France and beyond, but ongoing concerns over his physical condition and unclear role at Milan have stalled any potential exit.
Once considered a pivotal figure in Milan’s midfield, Bennacer has found himself increasingly on the fringes of the squad, exacerbating questions about his long-term prospects at the club.
One of the strongest approaches came from Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille, who explored the possibility of a deal that would bring Bennacer back to French football.
Discussions initially appeared promising, with both clubs entertaining the idea of a transfer that might also involve Adrien Rabiot heading to Milan.
However, talks soon collapsed, and Marseille reportedly backed out of the negotiation, citing hesitations regarding the midfielder’s fitness and recent form.
Meanwhile, other clubs such as Bologna have expressed interest in acquiring the Algerian international, but without a concrete offer, Milan remains stuck with a player they are unsure how to utilise.
The Rossoneri are reportedly unwilling to offload Bennacer below their valuation, which has only complicated matters as time runs out on potential deals.
Adding to the uncertainty is Bennacer’s current standing within the club’s internal structure. Due to his number of Serie A appearances, league rules prevent him from playing with Milan’s second team.
As a result, if he remains at the club without breaking into the first-team plans, he may be consigned to the reserves — a role that would stagnate his career and prove costly for the club’s wage budget, with his salary nearing €9 million per year.
Earlier this summer, Bennacer reportedly turned down a €20 million offer, opting to weigh his options further. But with the market window closing, his leverage may be diminishing.
A return to the Middle East, once dismissed by the player himself, could resurface as a viable alternative. Saudi Arabian clubs have previously shown interest, and a move to the Gulf is not entirely off the table.
For the Algerian national team, the situation is equally troubling. Head coach Vladimir Petkovic addressed Bennacer’s condition in a recent press briefing, expressing concern over the player’s ability to contribute.
He confirmed that the midfielder has not been training fully with Milan’s senior squad, participating only in limited sessions with the under-23 side due to lingering physical problems.
“Bennacer hasn’t trained with Milan, only with the U23s, and he’s had physical problems during those training sessions,” said Petkovic. “We’re going to help him and hope his situation resolves quickly because he’s important to us.”
Despite these complications, Bennacer remains a key figure in Algerian football. With the national team continuing its campaign for 2026 World Cup qualification, his return to full form and fitness is critical. His absence from recent line-ups has been noticeable, and Algeria will be eager to have their midfield engine back in action as soon as possible.
With just days left in the transfer window, Bennacer stands at a crossroads. Whether he finds a new club, reintegrates into Milan’s plans, or takes an unexpected turn in his career path, the coming week may prove decisive for both player and club.
