Ismael Bennacer has completed his move from AC Milan to Olympique de Marseille, signing a loan agreement with an option to buy.
The Algerian midfielder leaves the Italian giants after five and a half years, embarking on a new challenge in Ligue 1 with the French club.
Marseille confirmed the deal through an official statement, announcing the 27-year-old’s arrival.
“OM is pleased to announce the signing of Ismaël Bennacer from AC Milan.
A 27-year-old Algerian international, the midfielder has signed a loan with an option to buy with the Olympian club after successfully passing his medical,” the statement read.
Bennacer’s move to Marseille comes after a spell at Milan that saw the midfielder become a key figure in their midfield, although injury struggles often interrupted his progress.
Over his five and a half seasons at the San Siro, he made 178 appearances for the Rossoneri, contributing to the club’s successful campaigns, which included winning the Serie A title (Scudetto) and the Italian Supercoppa.
Despite his undeniable talent, recurring injuries limited Bennacer’s ability to establish himself as a regular starter in recent seasons.
As a result, the Algerian has sought a fresh opportunity in France, hoping to rediscover his form and continue his development at Marseille.
The move to Ligue 1 presents Bennacer with the chance to play a pivotal role in Marseille’s midfield, and the option to buy clause could see the player remain at the club permanently, depending on his performances.
His next step in Ligue 1 could also provide an important opportunity to regain the consistency that he was unable to maintain at Milan, and to build on his international career with Algeria.
