Algerian international Islam Slimani has addressed the speculation surrounding his departure from Belgian club Anderlecht last summer to Coritiba in Brazil, asserting that he never wished to leave.
Following a brief stint in Brazil, the all-time top scorer for the Algerian national team returned to the Belgian Jupiler Pro League last winter, this time joining Mechelen.
In remarks provided to Het Laatste Nieuws and reported by Belgian outlet Voetbalkrant, Slimani defended himself against reports suggesting he made excessive financial demands, which allegedly led to his departure from Anderlecht.
“In reality, I wanted to stay at Anderlecht.
I know that some parties have talked about me demanding a lot of money, but that’s not true,” stated the Algerian international.
Slimani further added, “The financial aspect was the least of my concerns.
All that matters is that the club management was looking for players with different qualities.”
