Isak strikes as Liverpool edge Bournemouth in Iraola’s Vitality Stadium return

Alexander Isak’s second-half finish gave Liverpool a narrow 1-0 win over Bournemouth as Andoni Iraola made an emotional return to the Vitality Stadium.

The match was closely contested, with few clear chances and little to separate the teams for extended periods. Liverpool had a slight advantage in possession and expected goals, but Bournemouth’s disciplined defending kept the visitors under pressure.

The home side made the brighter start and created the most threatening opportunities in the opening stages. Their best chance came in the 19th minute when Marcus Tavernier raced down the left before cutting the ball back for Evanilson. His flick towards the near post was saved by Alisson Becker, whose early interventions proved important in keeping Liverpool level.

Iraola was given a warm welcome by the Bournemouth supporters before kick-off. He spent three successful seasons at the club before joining the Reds and embraced Rose ahead of the match.

Liverpool gradually found their rhythm as the first half progressed. Dominik Szoboszlai twice tested Bournemouth goalkeeper Dorde Petrovic with dangerous free-kicks, while Bradley Barcola also forced a save.

Cody Gakpo saw an effort blocked and Florian Wirtz shot wide as Liverpool gained greater control of the game. However, they were unable to create a clear-cut opening before the interval.

The breakthrough arrived 13 minutes after half-time. Gakpo produced an excellent run down the right to make room for a cross. Wirtz attempted to shoot but instead helped the ball on, allowing Isak to react quickly and guide his finish into the bottom corner from close range.

Bournemouth responded by introducing Lewis Cook, David Brooks and Daniel Jebbison. The substitutes brought renewed energy to the hosts’ attack and briefly unsettled Liverpool.

Iraola’s side continued to press for an equaliser, but they were unable to create an opportunity in the second half that seriously troubled Alisson.

Liverpool had a late chance to double their lead when substitute Louie Koumas found himself with a clear opening, but he struck his shot straight at Petrovic.

The victory maintains Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season. It was only Andoni Iraola’s second win as Liverpool manager, taking the team to nine points and sixth place in the standings.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, remain without a league victory this season after suffering defeat in their latest meeting with their former manager.
