Ireland press conference halted after Israel-related question sparks heated exchange

The Republic of Ireland’s pre-match press conference was temporarily suspended after a question about an alleged insult involving one of their players led to a heated confrontation.

The incident occurred ahead of Sunday’s UEFA Nations League meeting between Ireland and Israel, when a journalist from Israel asked manager Heimir Hallgrimsson about an accusation that an Irish player had behaved offensively towards members of the opposing team.

The question quickly created disorder in the room. An official from the Football Association of Ireland intervened to respond to the allegation and attempted to take back the microphone, before a sharp verbal exchange developed among those present.

The press conference was then paused. It later resumed at a different location, but only Irish journalists were allowed to attend, according to French publication Foot Mercato.

The disruption comes amid a politically and sportingly sensitive atmosphere surrounding the two fixtures. Their previous meeting was also marked by significant tension and ended with a 3-0 victory for Ireland.

Interest in the return match is expected to intensify because of the political background to the fixture and the events surrounding the earlier encounter, with tensions extending beyond the pitch.
