Ipswich Town emerge as favourites to sign Swiss-Cameroonian forward Breel Embolo
Ipswich Town have moved into pole position in the race to sign Breel Embolo after the Switzerland international turned down an offer from Atlanta United.
The 29-year-old striker had been on the verge of joining the MLS club after Atlanta agreed a €17 million deal with Stade Rennais. The proposed transfer would have ranked among the most expensive in Major League Soccer history.
However, the move has stalled after Embolo rejected Atlanta’s contract proposal, leaving the door open for other clubs to pursue the forward.
Ipswich have been monitoring the situation for several weeks and have now stepped up their efforts to bring Embolo to England.
The newly promoted Premier League club are prepared to meet Rennes’ financial demands and have already presented the striker with a contract offer as they look to complete the deal before the transfer window closes.
Embolo remains under contract with Rennes until 2029, meaning Ipswich will have to reach an agreement with the French club as well as convince the player to make the move.
The striker’s experience could make him an important addition for Ipswich as they prepare for the demands of Premier League football. Embolo has previously played for Basel, Schalke, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Monaco before moving to Rennes.
Atlanta United have not completely abandoned their pursuit, but their failure to agree personal terms with Embolo has given Ipswich a significant advantage.
With Ipswich now pushing strongly to complete the transfer, the English club have emerged as the leading contenders to secure the Swiss forward before the summer window shuts.
