Ipswich land Portugal and Angola midfielder Florentino in €18.7m Burnley deal

Portugal and Angola midfielder Florentino has joined Ipswich from Burnley for €18.7m, adding an experienced defensive midfielder to the Premier League club’s squad.

The 26-year-old made the move on 4 August 2026 after spending the previous season with Burnley. He initially joined the Lancashire club from Benfica on loan in September 2025, with Burnley paying a €2m loan fee, before completing a €24m transfer on 1 July 2026.

Florentino made 31 Premier League appearances during his career and provided two assists. He has also played in the Champions League, Europa League, La Liga and Ligue 1, giving him experience across several of Europe’s leading competitions.

Born in Lobito, Angola, Florentino developed through Benfica’s academy and progressed to the club’s first team. He made 113 appearances in Liga Portugal, scoring three goals and registering five assists, while also featuring 69 times in Liga Portugal 2.

His time at Benfica included two Portuguese league titles, won in 2018-19 and 2022-23, as well as the Portuguese League Cup in 2024-25. He also won the Portuguese Super Cup three times, including in 2026, before ending his long association with the Lisbon club.

Florentino represented Portugal at youth level and was part of the Under-19 side that won the European Under-19 Championship in 2018. He also helped Portugal Under-17s to European success in 2016 and finished as an Under-21 European Championship runner-up in 2021.

The right-footed midfielder stands 1.84m tall and primarily operates in a defensive midfield role. His arrival follows a brief sequence of moves between Benfica and Burnley, with Ipswich now becoming the latest club in his senior career.

Florentino has signed a contract with Ipswich running until 30 June 2031.
