International petition launched to DISSOLVE CAF over AFCON 2025 controversy
An international petition demanding the immediate dissolution of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and a full overhaul of its governance structures has gained momentum.
The movement, driven by African citizens, civil society groups, and football supporters, comes in response to CAF’s decision to overturn Senegal’s 2025 AFCON triumph in favour of Morocco—a ruling that has sparked widespread outrage.
A Controversial Ruling
Critics argue the verdict undermines core sporting values, particularly the principle that results on the field should determine outcomes. Signatories warn that the decision sets a “dangerous precedent” that could compromise the integrity of African competitions.
Questions Over Governance
The petition also targets CAF leadership under President Patrice Motsepe, citing persistent concerns over transparency, accountability, and fairness across member nations. Relations with FIFA, led by Gianni Infantino, have also come under scrutiny, with observers questioning the independence of continental-level decisions.
Calls for Action
Those behind the petition are demanding:
- An independent and transparent investigation into the 2025 AFCON controversy,
- Clear assignment of responsibility,
- Comprehensive reform of CAF’s governance, and
- Referral to international sports bodies to “restore the truth on the ground.”
Organizers emphasize that the campaign extends beyond Senegal’s case, framing it as a pivotal moment for African football’s credibility and global reputation.
Leading the initiative, Cheikhou Oumar Sy is urging citizens to unite in support of “justice, transparency, and dignity in African sport.”
