Inter come from behind again to beat Udinese in eight-goal thriller

Inter maintained their perfect start to the Serie A season by recovering from two early goals down to defeat Udinese 5-3 on matchday four.

James Abankwah and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp put Udinese in control inside the opening 16 minutes, but Inter responded before half-time through Carlos Augusto and Nicolo Barella.

Marcus Thuram then completed the turnaround in the 57th minute before Francesco Pio Esposito and Ange-Yoan Bonny extended Inter’s lead. Idrissa Gueye scored a late third for Udinese, but it was not enough to prevent Inter from claiming all three points.

The result means Inter have now won their opening four league matches and remain level on 12 points with leaders Roma.

Udinese, meanwhile, stay on four points in 13th place.

Another comeback for Inter

For the second successive Serie A match, Inter followed a similar comeback script.

In their previous game against Napoli, Inter had fallen two goals behind before turning the match around. They did not move in front until the first minute of stoppage time, after having begun their recovery in the 56th minute.

Against Udinese, they again found themselves two goals down early on. Abankwah opened the scoring in the ninth minute, while Ekkelenkamp doubled the advantage seven minutes later.

It was the first time Inter had conceded twice in the opening 16 minutes of a league match since 17 October 2020, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice for Milan in the city derby.

Inter reduced the deficit in the 26th minute when Carlos Augusto found the net, and Barella equalised nine minutes later to ensure the teams went into the interval level.

Thuram completed Inter’s comeback in the 57th minute with a low finish from inside the penalty area.

Esposito added a fourth in the 67th minute, striking from inside the box, before Bonny made it 5-2 in the 79th minute after following up his initial shot.

Udinese continued to threaten and Gueye pulled one back in the 90th minute with a finish from inside the area. Inter, however, held on to secure victory and preserve their 100% record.
