Injury crisis hit Banyana Banyana squad ahead of WAFCON qualifier against DR Congo
South Africa’s Banyana Banyana are sweating over the injuries of several key players ahead of the final round of the 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Banyana Banyana will lock horns with DR Congo in a crucial WAFCON qualifier, with victories in both legs crucial for qualification. South Africa travels to Kinshasa for the first leg tie on Wednesday, October 22 before the reverse fixture at FNB Stadium on October 28.
The team commenced preparation for the much-anticipated clash at the weekend, without head coach Desiree Ellis.
South Africa will have to battle for positive results without four key players due to an injury setback. Mexico-based quartet of Hilda Magaia, Thembi Kgatlana, Amogelang Motau and Sinoxolo Cesane are all unavailable for the clash.
Meanwhile, the Banyana Banyana will also go into the game without their head coach, who is out of contract. The team will be guided by assistant coach Thinasonke Mbuli at the Pentecost Martyrs Stadium.
Desiree Ellis’ story is a mysterious one. Safa CEO Lydia Monyepao confirmed the coach’s contract was approved by the association but as to why it has not been signed is something she has distanced herself from.
It’s for this reason her assistant, Mbuli, is taking charge of this two-legged qualifier.
The return leg is next Tuesday at FNB Stadium and it is expected that Banyana will be at full strength for that encounter as the Mexican four are to be available.
