Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa could miss D.R Congo’s last two games in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The highly-rated player has suffered an injury that has ruled him out of action for four to five weeks.
Initial fears suggested the 29-year-old attacker may have suffered a serious ligament issue, but scans have revealed the damage is less severe than first expected.
While the diagnosis has spared him from the worst-case scenario of an ACL tear, the forward will still miss at least six upcoming matches.
Wissa, who is yet to make his debut for Newcastle since arriving on transfer deadline day, had been looking to make an immediate impact in Eddie Howe’s side.
Instead, the Magpies will now have to wait until after the October international break to see their new signing in action.
The injury comes as a significant blow to Newcastle, who had identified Wissa’s versatility and attacking threat as key assets to bolster their frontline this season.
It is also a major blow for D.R. Congo, who need to win both remaining matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup to have any chance of playing at the global tournament next month.
For Wissa, the focus now shifts to rehabilitation.
