Injured Eberechi Eze replaced by Harvey Barnes in England squad
Harvey Barnes has been handed a long-awaited return to the England squad after Eberechi Eze was forced to withdraw through injury, offering the Newcastle United winger a renewed opportunity to impress on the international stage.
Eze, born in England to Nigerian parents, had initially been included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for England’s upcoming March friendlies against Uruguay national football team and Japan national football team.
However, injury has ruled the Arsenal midfielder out, prompting a late reshuffle within the squad.
According to reports, Tuchel has turned to Barnes as a direct replacement, recalling the 28-year-old for the first time since 2020.
The decision underlines the manager’s willingness to reward form, with Barnes enjoying one of the most productive spells of his career this season.
The winger has been a key attacking outlet for Newcastle, contributing 14 goals and five assists across 50 appearances in all competitions.
His direct style, pace and eye for goal have made him a consistent threat, strengthening his case for international recognition at a time when competition for wide positions remains intense.
Barnes’ return to the England fold also follows a significant personal decision. The forward recently declined the chance to switch allegiance to Scotland, opting instead to remain patient in pursuit of another England opportunity.
That patience now appears to have been rewarded, with Tuchel offering him a platform to re-establish himself within the national setup.
