Injured Achraf Hakimi likely to recover in time before 2025 AFCON kicks off in Morocco
Morocco’s Atlas Lions have been handed a massive squad boost ahead of the 2025 CAF TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Sources have disclosed that injured full-back Achraf Hakimi could make a full recovery before the start of the continent showpiece.
The Paris Saint-Germain full-back sustained a left ankle injury during Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash against Bayern Munich after a harsh tackle by Liverpool’s Luis Díaz.
The incident left Hakimi in tears as he was forced off the pitch, sparking fears of a serious setback just weeks before the continental competition kicks off on home soil.
Initial fears of a fracture have since been ruled out. Medical assessments revealed a severe ankle sprain, but one that leaves room for optimism.
Sources close to the player have confirmed that the 27-year-old will not require surgery, allowing him a realistic chance of regaining full fitness before the AFCON begins on December 21.
Hakimi is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks and has already begun a strict rehabilitation programme. Determined to lead his nation at the tournament.
It is understood that the Moroccan captain is in constant contact with the national team’s medical and coaching staff as he works toward a timely comeback.
While his recovery timeline remains tight, those close to the player insist that returning for Morocco’s opening match against Comoros is still possible.
However, the team’s medical department is expected to monitor his progress closely to avoid rushing his return.
