Canadian authorities have refused a request to provide FIFA president Gianni Infantino with a police motorcade escort during the organisation’s annual congress in Vancouver, according to reports.

The decision, first reported by Global BC News on Tuesday, relates to security and transport arrangements for the FIFA gathering currently taking place in the Canadian city.

Officials declined to grant the level of escort requested, citing cost considerations and local policy.

The request would have involved a police motorcade typically reserved for the highest-level dignitaries, but Vancouver authorities chose not to approve it.

Request for high-level escort declined

According to Global BC News, FIFA had sought a police escort that would allow vehicles carrying Infantino to move through the city with priority access.

Such arrangements are designed to facilitate movement by enabling convoys to pass through traffic with minimal delay.

Global BC News reports that this type of escort “allows vehicles to run green lights and block traffic for other road users. This level is only one notch below that reserved for the Pope, equivalent to that used for visits by American presidents, and superior to that granted to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.”

The request placed the proposed escort among the highest tiers of security and logistical support typically provided for visiting global leaders.

However, the Vancouver Police Department declined to authorise the arrangement, bringing the matter into focus during the week of the FIFA congress.

Cost concerns and policy considerations

Authorities in Vancouver cited financial implications as a key reason behind the refusal.

Providing a motorcade of that level would have required significant deployment of police resources, leading to additional costs for the city.

Officials indicated that such expenses would ultimately fall on local taxpayers, a factor that contributed to the decision not to proceed with the request.

The stance reflects broader considerations around how public resources are allocated during major international events hosted by the city.

Official response from city authorities

In a statement addressing the issue, the mayor’s office emphasised that arrangements for the FIFA congress would still meet established standards for safety and organisation.

“All transportation arrangements will be appropriate, measured, and consistent with how Vancouver safely hosts major international events,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.

The response underlined the city’s intention to balance security needs with practical and financial constraints, while maintaining its capacity to host global gatherings.

FIFA congress continues

The FIFA congress, which brings together representatives from football associations around the world, is being held in Vancouver this week.

The annual meeting is a key event in the international football calendar, covering governance and organisational matters within the sport.

Despite the disagreement over transport arrangements, the event itself is proceeding as planned, with delegates attending sessions across the city.

The issue of the motorcade request has drawn attention to the logistical demands of hosting high-profile international figures and the varying approaches taken by host cities.

Balancing security and public interest

The decision highlights the balance that local authorities must strike when accommodating international organisations and their leadership.

While high-level security arrangements are often requested for prominent figures, cities retain discretion over what support they provide.

In this case, Vancouver officials opted for a more measured approach, indicating that standard arrangements would be sufficient to ensure safety without incurring additional costs.

The refusal also illustrates differences in protocol between countries and jurisdictions, particularly when it comes to the level of privilege extended to visiting officials.

As the FIFA congress continues, the focus remains on the organisation’s discussions and decisions, while the handling of transport arrangements serves as a reminder of the practical considerations involved in staging global events.
