Williams makes history despite Athletic’s defeat
Athletic Bilbao faced a tough challenge in their Europa League round of 16 first-leg encounter against AS Roma.
The Spanish side fell to a 2-1 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico, but Williams’ contribution ensured he left his mark on the club’s history.
The Ghanaian forward broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, giving Bilbao a temporary lead before Roma mounted a comeback.
Although the result did not go in their favour, Williams’ goal was a milestone moment, securing his place among the club’s European greats.
Now third in Athletic Bilbao’s European scoring charts
With his latest strike, Williams has now scored 12 goals in European competitions for Athletic Bilbao.
This achievement moves him into third place in the club’s all-time scoring charts in continental tournaments, surpassing the legendary Dani Ruiz-Bazán.
Only two players have scored more than him in European competitions for Bilbao:
- Aritz Aduriz (27 goals)
- Fernando Llorente (14 goals)
