His latest goal has propelled him into the top three of the Basque side’s all-time leading scorers in European competitions.
Williams makes history despite Athletic’s defeat
Athletic Bilbao faced a tough challenge in their Europa League round of 16 first-leg encounter against AS Roma.
The Spanish side fell to a 2-1 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico, but Williams’ contribution ensured he left his mark on the club’s history.
The Ghanaian forward broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, giving Bilbao a temporary lead before Roma mounted a comeback.
Although the result did not go in their favour, Williams’ goal was a milestone moment, securing his place among the club’s European greats.
Now third in Athletic Bilbao’s European scoring charts
With his latest strike, Williams has now scored 12 goals in European competitions for Athletic Bilbao.
This achievement moves him into third place in the club’s all-time scoring charts in continental tournaments, surpassing the legendary Dani Ruiz-Bazán.
Only two players have scored more than him in European competitions for Bilbao:

Williams’ consistency and longevity at the club have made him one of the most important figures in Athletic’s modern history.
Having made his debut in 2014, the forward has remained a key attacking presence for the team, showcasing his pace, versatility, and goal-scoring ability.
Impressive season continues for Williams
At 30 years old, Williams remains a crucial figure for both club and country.
His 37 appearances this season across all competitions have yielded 10 goals and 9 assists, further underlining his importance to Athletic’s attacking setup.
With the return leg against Roma still to come, Williams will be hoping to add to his tally and help Bilbao overturn the deficit as they continue their pursuit of European success.
