Inaki Williams celebrates Nico’s World Cup triumph with emotional immigrant story tribute

Athletic Bilbao forward Iñaki Williams shared a poignant message on Instagram congratulating his younger brother, Nico Williams, following Spain’s 2026 World Cup victory over Argentina, framing the triumph as a historic milestone for immigrant families.

The tribute carries immense weight rooted in their parents’ survival story. In 1994, Félix and María Williams fled Ghana, walking barefoot across 3,000 kilometers of the Sahara Desert to reach Spain.

María was pregnant with Iñaki during the trek. They eventually settled in the Basque Country, where Nico was later born. Today, Iñaki represents Ghana internationally, while Nico plays for Spain.

“Brother, you have won the World Cup. You have made history,” Iñaki wrote. “But beyond the trophy, thank you for this: you have made millions of immigrants like our parents feel proud that their future children can one day experience what you have experienced.”

Nico, who provided the crucial extra-time assist to secure Spain’s victory, celebrated on the pitch by placing his winner’s medal around his mother’s neck.

Iñaki emphasized that his brother’s success bridges societal divides, humanizing the ongoing migrant crisis.

“You have made millions of spaniards empathise with our story — a story that belongs to all the people who leave everything behind in search of a better future,” Iñaki added.

“Today, the world knows you even more, and you have taken our surname to infinity, for all eternity. I admire you. I love you. World champion.”
