French-born attacker of Algerian descent, Rayan Cherki proved himself yet again on Thursday night with an outstanding performance against Manchester United in the Europa League.
The in-form attacking midfielder started for Olympique Lyon in the game serving as the first leg of the tie in the quarter-final of the European completion.
In the exciting contest that ensued between the two sides, Cherki starred as his team fought to earn a 2-2 draw.
Lyon took the lead in the 25th minute after a costly blunder from United goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Cameroonian shot-stopper failed to deal with a swerving free-kick from Thiago Almada, allowing the ball to slip through his grasp and into the net for 1-0.
Manchester United responded just before the break. Centre-back Leny Yoro rose above the Lyon defence to meet a well-placed corner, heading home powerfully at the left post to level the score at 1-1.
The hosts seemed to have completed the comeback in the 88th minute when Bruno Fernandes floated a stunning cross into the box. Joshua Zirkzee timed his run perfectly, rising to nod the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-1 in favour of United.
But Lyon were not done yet. Deep into stoppage time, a scramble in the United box saw the ball fall kindly for Rayan Cherki, who reacted sharply and drilled a low shot into the bottom left corner to seal a dramatic 2-2 draw in the 97th minute.
The draw means Rayan Cherki and his Olympique Lyon teammates have all to play for in the second leg of the meeting next week.
