IN BRAZIL 2014, A JOURNALIST NEEDS BETWEEN 5 AND 7 MILLION FCFA TO GET BY

Alain Leiblang, the head of media operations for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, disclosed during the 77th congress of the International Association of Sports Press (AIPS-MONDE) in Baku that journalists covering the event will require a significant budget ranging from $10,000 to $15,000. This amounts to approximately 5 to 7 million FCFA. Leiblang attributed this high cost to the need to pay for various services such as catering, personal transport, and accommodation, despite free access to Wi-Fi and the Internet.

He emphasized the importance of journalists honoring their accreditation and attending the event, as failure to do so could result in reduced quotas for their countries in future World Cups. Leiblang highlighted the significant loss incurred during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where 20 to 30% of accredited journalists did not attend. He expressed hope that the 16,000 accredited journalists, including technicians and photographers, would fulfill their obligations and participate in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
