Imam Ashour marked his contract renewal with a powerful statement on the pitch, leading Al Ahly to a 4-1 victory over Al Masry in the fifth round of the Egyptian League on Thursday at Borg El Arab Stadium.
Returning to league action for the first time since February, Ashour scored a brace to reclaim his place atop the top scorers’ chart. He opened the scoring in the 35th minute, latching onto a precise cross from Palestinian striker Wissam Abu Ali to beat the goalkeeper with confidence.
The Al Ahly midfielder then stepped up in the 80th minute to convert a penalty, sealing his second of the night and bringing his league tally to 11 goals.
That strike pushed him ahead of Zamalek’s Nasser Mansi and Al Ahli Bank’s Osama Faisal by a single goal.
Taher Mohamed Taher also impressed, netting his fourth league goal of the season in the 45th minute, giving Al Ahly a 2-1 lead at the break as the team marched to another crucial win.
