West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has admitted he is uncertain about his future at the club as he waits for news on a possible contract extension.
Antonio, who owns the Samba Stars Academy in Ghana, is currently focused on recovering from a severe leg injury that has kept him sidelined for months.
The 35-year-old suffered a quadruple femur fracture in a car accident in December last year, when his Ferrari crashed into a tree in Epping Forest while returning from training.
Speaking to L’Equipe, Antonio revealed that despite his ongoing recovery efforts, his future at West Ham remains unclear.
“The question is whether the club wants to extend my contract. That’s my priority, but I’m waiting,” Antonio said.
“Until then, all I can do is focus on my recovery so that, wherever I am next year, I can deliver.”
Antonio’s current deal with the Hammers is nearing its end, and with the Jamaican international turning 36 in March, the club may be hesitant to offer him a new long-term contract.
Manager Graham Potter is reportedly keen to rejuvenate his squad with younger players, potentially leaving the veteran forward out of his future plans.
Antonio spoke candidly about the physical and mental challenges of his rehabilitation, describing the intense struggle to regain strength in his injured leg.
“The sessions are very tough. After each one, my leg is dead for a few hours!” he said.
“I do a lot of strength and power work to get my body back to normal. I’m still struggling because my brain is constantly telling my leg, ‘You can’t do it.’ But it’s getting better every day, every week.”
