Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Coach Augustine Eguavoen, has noted that he is rooting for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle.

This comes amid rumours of Eguavoen’s interest in becoming Super Eagles coach for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.

Speaking on the rumours in an interview with the media, Eguavoen said they are baseless, insisting that he hopes Eric Chelle will succeed.

“I feel very hurt by these baseless rumours because I really have no idea where they are coming from. I have a very good working relationship with Coach Eric Chelle, and I have absolutely no interest in taking over the squad. I am praying for him to succeed,” Eguavoen said as quoted on the NFF website.

He continued, “This was how the same speculators created schism and disaffection between myself and Gernot Rohr and José Peseiro, when these gentlemen coached the Super Eagles, at different periods. It is uncalled-for. We all need to work together to see the Super Eagles qualify for the World Cup and win the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations championship in Morocco.”

Eric Chelle is currently under massive pressure due to Nigeria’s struggles in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Many insist Chelle must be sacked if the Super Eagles fail to qualify for the tournament.
