Achraf Hakimi targets bold AFCON return despite ankle injury

Morocco international Achraf Hakimi has provided a positive injury update ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Hakimi, who recently secured the African Footballer of the Year award suffered an injury setback while in action for Paris Saint Germain in the UEFA Champions League early November.

The former Real Madrid and Inter Milan star was substituted before the half hour mark following a serious challenge from Bayern Munich star Luis Diaz.

Hakimi was initially ruled out of action for eight to ten weeks, undermining his availability for the Atlas Lions of Morocco ahead of the African Cup of Nations.

But the enterprising defender has delivered a positive injury update, as he works to recover in time for the Africa Cup of Nations next month.

“I’m not in pain anymore. It’s much better. The inflammation is gone. I’m not in pain anymore. I’m optimistic. I’m staying focused and working every day to be ready for the Africa Cup of Nations” Hakimi told Canal+.

The 35th edition of the African Cup of Nations has been scheduled to take place in the North African country between December 2025 and January 2026.

Considered as one of the outstanding players in world football, the potential return of Hakimi for the AFCON will come as a refreshing news for Morocco, who are seeking to annex the title on home soil.
