‘I’m here to enjoy football, not for revenge’ — Bissau-born Ansu Fati on Monaco move

Ansu Fati has stressed that his move to AS Monaco is not about proving Barcelona wrong, but rather reigniting his love for football and regaining consistency.

The 22-year-old winger, born in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, but raised in Spain, acknowledged his roots as the bridge between his heritage and professional identity.

After a frustrating spell under Hansi Flick at Barcelona—where he managed just 298 minutes across 11 appearances last season—Fati opted for a season-long loan to Monaco, aiming for regular playing time.

Fati said he is motivated by enjoyment rather than retaliation: “I have not come here for revenge at all: I am here to enjoy football, as I haven’t had that opportunity for a long time.”

He hopes that strong performances will help him reclaim a spot in the Spain national team.

Monaco confirmed the loan—complete with a buy option—shortly after Fati signed a contract extension with Barcelona until 2028. The French side represents a fresh start for the prodigy.

Monaco’s sporting director also revealed that Fati passed his medical successfully and will don the number 31 jersey this season.

Having previously been loaned to Premier League side Brighton—where injury disrupted his momentum—Fati is now determined to make Ligue 1 the turning point.

At Monaco, he hopes to translate his early promise into consistent performances and rediscover his spark.
