Chelsea winger, Tyrique George, has expressed delight after assisting Enzo Fernández’s goal in the team’s 2-1 victory over FC Copenhagen in the Europa Conference League.
The match, played at Parken Stadium, saw George’s contribution play a pivotal role in securing a first-leg advantage in the Round of 16.
The first half was uneventful, with both teams struggling to create clear chances. Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, made strategic substitutions at halftime, introducing Enzo Fernández, Christopher Nkunku, and Levi Colwill.
These changes immediately impacted the game. Just 56 seconds into the second half, Reece James, captaining the side, scored a remarkable goal from 25 yards, giving Chelsea the lead.
Chelsea continued to press forward, and in the 65th minute, George showcased his vision and composure. After regaining possession, he delivered a precise pass to the onrushing Fernández, who finished confidently to double Chelsea’s advantage.
Despite Chelsea’s dominance, FC Copenhagen remained resilient. In the 80th minute, Gabriel Pereira reduced the deficit with a powerful header, keeping the Danish side’s hopes alive for the return leg at Stamford Bridge.
Reflecting on his assist, George, who is of Nigerian and Ghanaian descent, said he is satisfied in contributing to the team’s success.
“It was a tough game to be fair. They are a good team so we had to dig deep. It was all about staying positive, especially in the first half. We knew they were good team, but we knew eventually we would get our chances.
“It was quite surreal at the start but once you’re in the game, you just block it out.
“It was a good goal,” he added. “I just saw Enzo on the edge of the box, so I gave it to him and it was great to help the team.
“It was about digging deep today. It’s been a good experience trying to get as many minutes as possible.”
