Ilay Camara has left his international future undecided as the Standard Liège player weighs up the possibility of representing either Belgium or Senegal.
The 22-year-old, who is eligible to play for both countries through his mixed heritage, addressed the matter during a press conference on Friday.
Camara, currently on loan from RWD Molenbeek, is enjoying a standout season with Standard Liège, drawing attention from both national teams.
Despite recent talks with Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, the defender admitted he is yet to make a definitive decision. “It will be a choice of the heart.
My mother is Belgian, my father comes from Senegal, so I have blood from both cultures in my veins,” Camara said, as reported by the club’s official website.
“I can’t say now what will happen. It’s at the moment that my mind will decide, whether it’s in favour of one or the other.
If I feel good about this call-up, I will go. On the other hand, if I don’t like it, it’s clear that I won’t accept it. We’ll see.”
Camara’s performances in the Jupiler Pro League have bolstered his reputation, making him a coveted prospect for both Belgium’s Under-21 side and Senegal’s senior team.
Trained at Anderlecht before his move to Molenbeek, the versatile player is set to face his former club on Sunday.
With international fixtures on the horizon, Camara’s decision is anticipated in the coming weeks as he weighs his options between the Red Devils and the Lions of Teranga.
