AFCON 2015: Guinea’s Idrissa Sylla Joins Anderlecht Amid Tournament Duty
By BBC Sport Africa
Guinea striker Idrissa Sylla has completed a move to Belgian giants Anderlecht while on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea. The 24-year-old forward, who was representing his country at the tournament, signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Brussels-based club.
Sylla, who made the switch from Zulte Waregem, was officially unveiled in Belgium on Thursday following his return from AFCON duties. This marks his return to a familiar setting—having previously played for another top-flight side in the Belgian league—now joining a team currently sitting second in the Pro League standings.
“My First Quality Is Scoring Goals”
Speaking at his presentation, Sylla expressed his eagerness to contribute to his new club but stressed that his immediate focus remains on recovering from an injury.
“For the moment, I’m focusing on my injury first,” Sylla told reporters. “After that, on the pitch, I’ll give my all to help the club—and for myself too.”
The confident forward highlighted his main attributes: “In fact, my first quality is scoring goals—I’m a striker, that’s the most essential. Secondly, to keep the ball and play with my teammates too.”
A Strategic Move for Anderlecht
Anderlecht’s acquisition of Sylla comes as part of their push for the league title, with the club hoping the Guinean international can boost their attacking options in the crucial second half of the season. Known for his physical presence and sharp finishing, Sylla brings both domestic and international experience to the squad.
His transfer from Zulte Waregem also reflects Anderlecht’s strategy of recruiting proven talents from within the league, aiming for immediate impact rather than long-term development alone.
Focus Shifts Back to the AFCON
Sylla’s signing took place while he was still competing at AFCON 2015, underlining the growing trend of mid-tournament transfers. Guinea’s national team, featuring Sylla among its attacking ranks, has drawn attention for its spirited performances at the competition.
As Sylla recovers and settles into his new club, both Anderlecht and Guinea fans will be watching closely, hopeful that the striker can translate his confidence into consistent goalscoring form on both fronts.
Idrissa Sylla has signed with Anderlecht until mid-2019. He previously played for Zulte Waregem and Le Mans.
