Idrissa Gana Gueye chooses Al-Diriyah for next chapter of his career in Saudi Arabia

Idrissa Gana Gueye has agreed to continue his career in Saudi Arabia after signing for recently promoted Al-Diriyah on Sunday, 9 August.

The 36-year-old Senegal midfielder joins the club as a free agent after his contract with Everton came to an end. His agreement with Al-Diriyah covers one season, with the option of extending the deal for a further campaign.

The move gives Gueye a new challenge after his spell with Everton, where he had played since the 2022-23 season. He now becomes part of an Al-Diriyah squad preparing for life after promotion, with the club confirming him as its third foreign recruit.

Gueye arrives with extensive international experience. He has represented Senegal 135 times and has scored seven goals for his country. The midfielder has also played at the World Cup with the Senegal national team.

His switch to Al-Diriyah follows the conclusion of his second spell at Everton. Gueye had been with the English club since the 2022-23 campaign, before becoming available at the end of his contract.

The Saudi Arabian club’s decision to recruit him adds experience to a team that has only recently secured promotion. Gueye’s one-year contract, together with the additional option, provides Al-Diriyah with the opportunity to retain him beyond the initial season if both parties agree.

For the Senegal international, the move represents the latest stage of a career that has now taken him to a new country and league. His record of 135 appearances for Senegal makes him one of the most experienced players in the Al-Diriyah squad, while his World Cup involvement adds further international pedigree.

The club’s confirmation of Gueye completes its third overseas signing. With the midfielder now committed to Al-Diriyah for the coming season, the Saudi Arabian side will look to make use of his experience as it begins its latest chapter following promotion.

Gueye’s Everton contract officially ended before the switch, allowing him to join Al-Diriyah without a transfer fee. The agreement announced on Sunday secures his services for one season, with a further year available under the option included in the deal.
